Raft of the Medusa 24"x36", $995
Remain Calm is a body of work inspired by the charm and absurdity of Airline Safety Cards. For years, I have been collecting safety cards from a wide variety of carriers, and I noticed they share an amateurish, cartoon aesthetic, garish colors, and absurd juxtapositions of calm in the face of disaster. I have long thought they would provide a wonderful launching pad for a painting series, but it wasn’t until I stopped working for several months to take care of my mother as her dementia worsened that I found the time and motivation to begin.
The first painting I made was Ocean Baby, an absurdly large beast of an infant tucked into a puffy yellow PFD and lost at sea. An astute friend pointed out that the image was a psychological self-portrait, a metaphor for the feelings of being adrift after the loss of a parent. This led me to return to the Ocean Baby metaphor in the final painting in the series, The Raft of the Medusa, where the adults of the current generation have completely abandoned the children of the next to the effects of rising sea levels and the overall “plane crash” of global climate change.
